Abstract

The city of Pittsburgh, PA, is currently undergoing a revitalization of its community resources, urban areas, and green spaces. Although historically an industrial city, it entered a period of economic recession after the steel industry declined. Today, a vast greenway system and new period of economic growth are further improving the city, making it stronger than before. Larimer is the next focus neighborhood in Pittsburgh’s redevelopment plan, and is planned to be a leading “green” community for the city. Larimer is located at a high elevation in the city, east of downtown Pittsburgh and adjacent to Highland Park. The neighborhood is just a 15-minute drive from the heart of Pittsburgh, with access to major highways, outdoor recreation, and historical and cultural sites. However, it maintains a sense of place and individuality, and it has the capacity to provide the surrounding community with a range of local resources.
